About Cozumel

The worlds most popular cruise port, Cozumel, is just a small (12 miles long) island off Mexicos Yucatan Peninsula but it has a vibrant, pulsating Latin heart. Everywhere is all action and activity from the music-playing downtown bars, cafés and shops to the watersports on offer from the glorious beaches.

Probably the best beach is at the Chankanab National Park which also boasts a beautiful botanical garden with 800 plant species. Best of all, though, is that it has a pool linked by an underground tunnel to the sea where you can swim with the dolphins who come and go freely there. Inland, there are jeep and horse-riding trips through the mangroves, while the most popular tour to the mainland is for the Caribbean-facing Mayan ruins at Tulum.

Mayan Ruins and Island Drive

Activity medium

Duration: 3½ hours

Discover the island’s captivating past, where ancient Mayans once ruled. Explore ruins, monuments and key sites.

Cozumel Island played an important role in the ancient Mayan world, both as a stop along the famous ‘white road’ trade route and as a significant focus for religious pilgrimage.

Explore the nearby archaeological site at San Gervasio, where you’ll see the island’s largest and best-preserved Mayan ruins. San Gervasio was once the island’s centre of culture and religion. The Mayans worshipped Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, childbirth, fertility, medicine, and weaving. Follow your guide as they lead you through the archaeological site sharing important facts, cultural accounts and myths. The area is surrounded by native trees and plants, creating a real sense of the ancient Mayan world. Keep your eyes out for butterflies, birds and the abundant iguanas that sunbathe on the early Mayan constructions.

Afterwards, return to your coach and head off for a scenic drive along Cozumel’s beautiful western shore. Circle the island and make a brief photo stop at a beach club on the far side of the island. It’s an idyllic landscape of white sand beaches, rugged rock formations, lush tropical vegetation and the iridescent Caribbean waters.
