About Lautoka

Fijis main cruise port, Lautoka, on its largest island (Viti Levu) is very much a working city, steeped in the sugar and timber industries which makes it an even more fascinating experience for visitors. There is a chance to capture the essence of Fijian life here.

Past the avenue of Royal Palms along the main street, the ornate Sikh and Krishna temples and mosques give away the presence of a large Indian population.  It is that contrast between Indian and Fijian lifestyles which gives an extra buzz to the city. Worth a visit are the bustling daily market and the thriving botanical gardens while, outside the city, the National Heritage Park and the Viseisei village - said to be the oldest settlement in Fiji - are the most popular tours on the spectacularly scenic northern side of the island.

Duration: 4 hours

Experience a glimpse into Fijian village life, visit the Orchid Garden of the Sleeping Giant and shop for local crafts.

A scenic drive takes you through sugarcane fields to the historic village of Viseisei.

Meaning ‘spread out,’ Viseisei, is said to be the oldest settlement in Fiji and its inhabitants are thought to be the descendants of the Melanesian explorers who landed near here around 3,500 years ago. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles have visited here and you will receive just as royally warm a welcome, with a Fijian kava ceremony, and traditional entertainment.

Afterwards, your tour continues to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, the passion project of American actor, Raymond Burr. The garden lies at the base of a mountain in the Sabeto Range and is often referred to as the Sleeping Giant due to its shape and the accompanying myth, which surrounds it. The gardens specialise in orchids, and during a guided walk, you will see many of these beautiful blooms in all shapes and colours. Your guide will explain the names and characteristics of the abundant native flora and fauna.

Complete your visit with a refreshing fruit juice, before rounding off your tour with some free time to browse the local craft stalls in Nadi.
