About St. Kitts

If you have ever dreamt of the classic Caribbean island, chances are it looked a lot like St. Kitts. You will recognise that mixture of deserted beaches, sleepy villages, lush rainforest greenery and sugarcane fields and maybe even the mini-mountain range with a dormant volcano in its midst.

Yet the first thing you will see when the ship docks is pretty much brand new: St. Kitts cruise terminal and marina complex - a collection of shops, bars, restaurants and gardens. Once through that, though, you can explore the back streets and impressively restored Georgian buildings of the capital, Basseterre.

Independent since 1983, St. Kitts covers just 65 square miles but has its own World Heritage site: Brimstone Hill fortress.  Another option for St. Kitts cruise visitors is the 45-minute ferry to sister island Nevis.

Amazing Grace and Romney Manor

Activity medium

Duration: 3 hours

Discover the connection between St Kitts and the famous hymn, ‘Amazing Grace', combined with a visit to the lovely Romney Manor.

Located just a 45 minute drive from Port Zante is the Amazing Grace Experience, just a small visitor’s centre that is devoted to an English slave trader, John Newton. The centre is voted as one of the island’s best attractions to visit by The Telegraph.

The centre depicts the poignant and little-known story of how John Newton became a changed man during a visit to St Kitts, and subsequently joined the clergy. This move led to his campaigning for the abolition of slavery and during this time several hymns were composed, one of which was ‘Amazing Grace’. During your visit, you’ll enjoy a short video and have the opportunity to browse the fascinating exhibitions and the gift shop.

Afterwards, you’ll head to Romney Manor, which is also home to the Caribelle Batik. Here, you can admire the gardens and you’ll also see a batik demonstration. Watch as the local artists produce colourful fabric apparel and perhaps make a purchase as a souvenir of your visit.

Enjoy the island scenery as you take the return drive to Port Zante.
