In Southampton...

If you’re fascinated by maritime history, the SeaCity Museum is the place to learn about Southampton’s distinguished port heritage. The museum tells the story of the city’s people through the ages, their captivating lives and historic connections with the sea. Interactive experiences designed for all ages help to bring the intriguing stories to life.

If you’re looking for more history, you’ve no need to look far, as you’ll find Southampton’s Old Walls standing proudly around the city centre. The Old Walls are a sequence of defensive structures that date all the way back to the 13th century, and were built to protect the town’s growing prosperity as a trading centre. Today, around half the length of the 1.25-mile long medieval Old Walls survives, together with 13 of the 29 defensive towers and six out of the eight gates. Why not wander the walls, and then grab a bite to eat at one of West Quay’s alfresco restaurants for views of Arundel Tower.

The vibrant city centre is also often home to festivals throughout the year, art installations, and pop-up events. And of course you’ll find an abundance of shops. So if you happen to forget your favourite pair of earrings, or those lucky cufflinks - fear not! There are two large shopping centres - West Quay and Marlands – as well as independent boutiques in Bedford Place, and daily markets all for browsing.

Near Southampton...

If you have a bit more time to spare Winchester is well worth a visit. The ancient capital of England is famed for its legendary and literary attractions. In The Great Hall you’ll find King Arthur’s Round Table, one of the greatest symbols of medieval mythology. Thought to have been created by King Edward I (an Arthurian enthusiast), for a tournament held near Winchester which marked the betrothal of one of his daughters.

Another unmissable attraction is Winchester Cathedral, which boasts the longest nave and greatest overall length of any Gothic cathedral in Europe. Explore more than 1000 years of history and gaze in awe at the magnificent structure, stain glass windows, wall paintings, contemporary works of art, and burials – one of which is for the celebrated novelist Jane Austen.

Looking for a bit of rural respite? The New Forest is a short drive from Southampton. Here amongst idyllic glades and ancient woodland you can spot free-roaming ponies, cattle, donkey and deer. Unspoilt forest gives way to quaint villages such as Lyndhurst, where you’ll find traditional cream tea selling cafes, cosy pubs and the freshest New Forest ice creams. In Beaulieu you can enjoy relaxing riverside walks, or take a step back in time at Beaulieu Palace House and National Motor Museum. Whilst in Lymington you’ll find artisanal shops and cobbled lanes leading to a small quay – the perfect spot to catch some rays and watch the bobbing boats.
