When we heard all 16 members of the Wilson family had sailed together on Ventura, we just had to ask for a personal account of their holiday. In the words of grandfather Michael Wilson, here’s what happened when his whole family (a mountain of luggage and a bucket load of anticipation in tow), arrived in Southampton for their cruise. As we checked in to board Ventura at Southampton, my wife Peggy and I wondered if we’d done the right thing. Milling around us were 14 members of our extended...

Why go on a Caribbean cruise holiday? Because, once paradise has been discovered, it can never be forgotten. The Caribbean, with its sugar-soft beaches, turquoise seas and gently swaying palms, is one of the world’s best-loved holiday destinations. With so many beautiful and diverse islands, there is always somewhere or something new to explore. The Caribbean really is made for cruise holidays. From Barbados and Antigua to St. Lucia and Mayreau, a wealth of hidden treasures including historic...

About Tunis (from La Goulette) in Destinations

image alt

La Goulette, the cruise port for Tunis, lies about 40 minutes shuttle bus drive away from the city, but is much closer to the ruins of Carthage. The 2nd century Colosseum and Roman Temple are only 20 minutes drive from the port, and most excursions combine Carthage with a restful stop at the pretty seaside village of Sidi Bou Said. There are more archaeological treasures to be found in Tunis itself; the Musée du Bardo houses a huge collection of Byzantine and Roman mosaics, while you can see...

About Mormugao in Destinations

image alt

India's sunshine state of Goa has many natural riches: stunning beaches, fertile farmland, thick forests, lush river valleys and acres of peaceful coconut groves.   Located along the Arabian Sea, the main port Mormugao is tucked down in the Southern district. Away from the hippie party strip of the north, and a short drive from the busy port, you'll find a much quieter, more serene scene. With less development here, you can spread out and enjoy miles of blissful palm-fringed sand...

About Florence / Pisa in Destinations

image alt

Founded in the 16th century by the Grand Dukes of Tuscany - the Medici Family, Livorno remains a busy port and town. Its centre, which is walkable from the port, has some pretty bars, cafés and chic shops but most of Livornos cruise visitors head straight for Pisa, Florence, or the Tuscan towns of Lucca and Siena. You may be surprised to find that the recently restored Leaning Tower is just one of many towers in Pisa and that elegant Florence is compact enough to be walkable. With the Arno...

About Cochin in Destinations

The view of the harbour is immediately recognisable even if you have never cruised to this uniquely picturesque Indian port before. For the lines of fishing nets gracefully hanging down from bamboo frames along the waterfront have inspired artists and hotographers ever since this Chinese fishing style was imported into Indias Kerala region. It is a magical welcome to a mystical place, especially its old town - Fort Kochi (Cochin). This not only has a 16th century Portuguese-built church but...

About Tokyo in Destinations

Facing Tokyo Bay, Yokohama has one of the finest harbours in the world. Only a little over 100 years ago, Yokohama was an insignificant village of one hundred farming-fishing families.
